Fuel Comparisons

Customers have asked us how to compare the cost of different fuels so they can see for themselves the savings in their heating bill. Comparisons are not always straight forward with some products sold by the tonne or litre, so a common denominator is needed to measure fuels in respect of each other. A Kilowatt hour (kWh) is a unit of energy equal to 1000 watts and is mostly seen as a billing unit for energy delivered to electricity customers, but can just as easily quantify the heat available from brites and other fuels like oil.

brites have needed to take steps to help consumers avoid being mis-led by the cost of alternative products. Instead of comparing wood pellets in terms of weight (tonnes), which gives no indication to the heat value, consumers can now clearly see the actual cost they are paying for heat.

The graph below shows the average cost of oil in Northern Ireland, using figures obtained from www.consumercouncil.org.uk, compared to the cost of brites. The price of each fuel is presented as the cost in pence for 1 kWh and is inclusive of VAT.
